Hi, I’m Squish — a five-year-old poodle–dachshund mix with 22 pounds of pure love packed into a very loyal little body. I’m a smart, affectionate boy who is ready to find a forever family that will cherish me as much as I will cherish them. My absolute favorite place to be is right next to my person. I’m what they call a “velcro dog,” which means if you stand up, I stand up. If you move rooms, I move rooms. And if you sit down… well, you can bet I’ll be right there testing out your lap.
I’m very food motivated and eager to please, which means I’ll happily follow instructions for a tasty reward. I do get a little impatient when the treats take too long to arrive, though — that’s when I might show off my surprisingly impressive vertical jump. I’m also quite the athlete and love a good game of catch. In fact, my foster mom once watched me catch a fly mid-air that was bothering me. I enjoy puzzles, toys of all sizes, chasing squirrels and rabbits, and soaking up as many pets and belly rubs as possible.
When meeting new people or animals, I prefer everyone to take things slow and calm. It took me some time to get used to my 40-pound foster brother, and while I’ll occasionally enjoy a little tug-of-war with him, I’m not a fan of too much chaos. If the energy gets too big, I simply excuse myself and find a cozy spot to relax.
My days usually start bright and early around 7 a.m. when I head out for a short potty walk with my foster brother before breakfast. After eating, I like to inspect the backyard to make sure everything is in order — I take my patrol duties seriously and enjoy hunting for acorns or other little treasures. My foster mom works from home, which means I get plenty of opportunities to sit in her lap throughout the day, which is exactly how I like it. I also go on a few short walks during the day because I prefer finding a nice bush while we’re out rather than using the old tree in the yard. As the afternoon rolls toward 5 p.m., I start reminding everyone that dinner time is approaching — I’m very punctual about meals. After dinner, I enjoy a couple more short potty strolls before heading to my crate for a peaceful night’s sleep.
When I first arrived, I tested positive for heartworms and began treatment right away. I’ve already received my injections and am currently resting and recovering. Sometimes I forget I’m supposed to take it easy and try to bounce around, but my people help remind me to stay calm while I heal.
Because I experienced some food insecurity in the past, I can be protective of my food and may feel unsure around unfamiliar dogs outside my home. I do best with a calm, patient family who will help me continue building confidence and guide me gently as I learn that everything is okay. I can also get a little stressed if people are roughhousing or acting intimidating, but when I feel safe and supported, my loving personality truly shines.
One fun fact about me: I’m extremely intelligent… but somehow I still haven’t quite mastered the command “sit.” It’s just so hard when you’re this excited about life. Another fun fact? I’m bilingual. When I first arrived, I only understood Spanish, but with the help of my foster mom, I’ve been learning English too.
All I really want is a person of my own — someone patient, kind, and ready for a loyal companion who will follow them everywhere and love them endlessly. If you’re looking for a devoted little shadow with a big heart, I might just be your guy.
