Hi, I’m Gus. 17 pounds of loyal, curly devotion wrapped up in one very determined little body. I am 7 years old, and while I cannot see the world with my eyes, I have learned to navigate it beautifully with my nose, my memory, and my whole heart.
Last summer was a hard chapter for me. I was left alone in a field, and not long after I was rescued it became clear that I had serious bladder and kidney stones. I had surgery, lots of follow ups, and a whole team of people fighting for me. Today I am feeling so much better. I have energy again. I carry my toys around like prized possessions. I enjoy gentle strolls and I love being near my people more than anything.
Because of my history with kidney stones, I eat a special prescription diet to help keep my body feeling its best. I will likely need to stay on that long term. My foster feeds me carefully measured portions twice a day, and I think crunchy ice cubes in my water bowl are the height of luxury. I do sometimes have a little urinary dribble in between potty breaks, which is common with everything my body has been through. Regular potty trips help a lot, and I wear a belly band overnight just to keep things tidy. It is not a big deal. It is simply part of loving me well.
I am a professional cuddler and an expert nap companion. A couple of relaxed twenty to thirty minute walks a day is perfect for me, then I am very happy to settle in for couch time. When my people leave, I rest calmly in a gated hallway without fuss. At night I sleep in my crate in the bedroom because I feel safest knowing you are close by.
I thrive in a calm household with a steady routine. My blindness means I appreciate consistency and a fenced yard where I can safely explore and learn the layout of my world. I do well with other dogs and would likely be just fine with cats too. I am not looking for chaos. I am looking for patience, kindness, and someone who understands that my potty training is a work in progress because of my medical past, not because I am not trying.
If you can commit to my special diet, offer me a peaceful home, and give me grace as I continue to improve with my potty routine, I promise you something extraordinary in return. I will love you fiercely. I will follow the sound of your voice from room to room. I will rest my head against you like you are my whole world.
Because to me, you will be.
